New Delhi: The Supreme Court on Monday said that only 57 borrowers have defaulted on bank loans worth Rs 85,000 crore after perusing a report submitted by RBI.
RBI had earlier submitted the report mentioning names of persons who had taken loan worth over Rs 500 crore, defaulted and asked the central bank to not unveil their names.
“Who are these people who have borrowed money and are not paying back? Why this fact that the person has borrowed money and not paying back be not known to public,” a SC bench headed by Chief Justice TS Thakur asked.
The bench added that RBI should no longer withhold the information about defaulters so that in case of an RTI inquiry, names of defaulters ought to be revealed.
