Imphal: Five-time World Amateur Boxing Champion and subject of a Bollywood feature starring Priyanka Chopra, MC Mary Kom, is celebrating her 33rd birthday on Tuesday.

Mary Kom, also known as ‘Magnificient Mary’, is a boxer from Kangathei, Manipur. She is the first Indian woman boxer to win a Gold Medal in the Asian Games and the first Indian woman boxer to compete in the Olympics, where she won a Bronze Medal. She was also the only woman to qualify for the Laisham Sarita Devi boxing event and the first amateur athlete to win the Padma Bhushan.

An animal rights supporter and a feminist icon amongst Indians, Kom has been the subject of a biography published by Harper Collins in 2013 and a Bollywood feature film in 2014.
