JDU demands CBFC chief’s ouster over Udta Punjab controversy

New Delhi: The Janata Dal United (JDU) party has raised its voice in support of the controversy surrounding Bollywood flick ‘Udta Punjab’, demanding Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) chief Pahlaj Nihalani’s dismissal. The party backed the movie saying that the film shows the ‘real face’ of Punjab.

The controversy over Shahid Kapoor-Alia Bhatt starrer ‘Udta Punjab’ took a political turn when the allegations were made that the Censor Board doesn't want the movie to be set in Punjab. In fact the board also made 89 cuts to obliterate cuss words in the film, invoking huge uproar on social media.

Earlier, the Congress party also reacted on the ongoing furore over the movie. Congress vice president Rahul Gandhi on Tuesday had said that Punjab has a crippling drug problem and censoring Udta Punjab will not fix it. He said the government must accept the reality and find solutions to end the menace. The ruling party in Punjab, Akali Dal, had objected to the movie.

However, the film’s co-producer Anurag Kashyap asked the political parties to stay out of the controversy and said he will “fight his own battle”.

Terming the board dictatorial, Kashyap had tweeted:
