Tabla maestro Sandeep Das has joined the very exclusive club of Indians who have made the country proud on international podiums by winning a Grammy award in the World Music Category on Sunday.
Sandeep, who had made his debut with Pandit Ravi Shankar, received the prestigious recognition for Yo-Yo Ma’s Silk Road Ensemble ‘Sing Me Home’ that won the Grammy for Best World Music Album, a category that also included six-time nominee Anoushka Shankar’s album ‘Land of Gold’.
Sandeep Das, born and brought up in India, started playing at the age of 16 and has received training from Kishan Maharaj in Benaras.
This was Das’ third Grammy nomination. He attended the event wearing a traditional kurta, held in Los Angeles on Sunday night and received the award with other members of the ensemble.
“I am very proud of the Grammy because I’m representing India on a global platform. This was my third Grammy nomination, and we did it this time. So, yes, it feels good”, said Sandeep on his Grammy win.
