The Tamil film industry is in a tizzy since June 30 when the state government announced the 30% local body tax in addition to the GST. More than 1100 theatres across Tamil Nadu went into shutdown from July 3 to July 6 causing losses to the tune of nearly Rs 50 crores.
The Tamil Nadu Film Producers Council and the Tamil Nadu Theatres Association committees were in talks with the state government from Monday to Thursday.
The Tamil film industry had two basic demands – that they be allowed to have flexible pricing on theatre tickets and the local body tax be revoked. However, the state government did not relent on the local body tax.
