In recent years, there have not been too many Tamil films that focus on women and women’s rights. But that trend has slowly started to change. And the latest in this welcome series is ‘Magalir Mattum’ which releases on September 15.
Actress Jyothika made a strong impact with ‘36 Vayadhinile’, a remake of the Malayalam hit film ‘How Old Are you’. Women flocked to theatres to see her performance and the film became an anthem for many who could connect with her character, Vasanthi. The movie was not just a feel-good one but it inspired many women and that is what will also be the trademark of ‘Magalir Mattum’.
Director Bramma helms this project that revolves around Jyothika, Saranya, Urvashi and Bhanupriya. The movie revolves around Prabhavathi (Jyothika), a documentary filmmaker ‘who wants to be herself’. Prabhavathi is young and independent but not a ‘feminist’ according to the director. In fact, Jyothika had said that she was surprised to see a film with such strong female characters penned by a man!
