Following the sad demise of multi-talented actor Tom Alter, who passed away today at the age of 67 after losing the battle with skin cancer, celebrities from the film fraternity paid tribute and offered condolences on the death of the Padma Shri actor. Tom Alter, a Padmi Shri winner, also tried his forte as a writer, theatre artist, and director. “It is with sadness we announce the death of Tom Alter, actor, writer, director, Padma Shri, and our dear husband and father”, actor’s family said in a statement.Tom Alter was the son of American Christian missionaries of English and Scottish ancestry. Alter spent many years of his life living in Mumbai and in the Himalayan hill station of Landour.

Expressing his grief on the demise of the Padmi Shri actor and recalling his contribution to the film world and theatre, PM Modi extended his condolences to the family and admirers of Tom Alter.

Paying tribute to Tom Alter, Bollywood jewel Rishi Kapoor wrote on Twitter, “RIP. My friend and colleague Tom Alter. Bless you”.

Bollywood’s ‘Jhakas’ actor Anil Kapoor also took to his Twitter account and said, “An all-rounder is what he was, with a heart of gold. Back in the day, I even studied acting under him. You will be missed dearly, Tom Alter.”

“Goodbye to you my trusted friend! Actor Tom Alter, a Padma Shri awardee, dies of cancer at 67,” tweeted Mahesh Bhatt‏.

Actor Nimrat Kaur wrote on Twitter, “Waking up to some tragic news about the passing away of Mr. Tom Alter. A one of a kind, grace personified, a thorough gentleman. RIP Tom Alter.”

Tom Alter during his academic years was occasionally referred as ‘Blue-eyed saheb with impeccable Hindi’. He acted more than 300 films and was also the part of famous Indian Television serial ‘Zabaan Sambhalke’.
