After much anticipation, Deepika Padukone-starrer Padmavati’s trailer was released on Monday. The response to the trailer has been overwhelming with many showering praises upon Ranveer Singh and Deepika Padukone, who look absolutely stunning in Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s upcoming magnum opus. Padmavati trailer has also left audiences intrigued about Rani Padmavati as they want to know more about Mallika-e-Chittor. Here is everything you must know about the ‘queen’ at the heart of matter.

— Rani Padmavati or Rani Padmini’s origins can be traced back to the poem ‘Padmavat’, which was penned down by Malik Muhammad Jayasi. According to it, she was born in Sinhala kingdom to King Gandharvsena and Champavati. The existence of Rani Padmavati however remains clouded as many consider her a figment of Jayasi’s imagination.

— Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s Padmavati revolves around 14th century siege of the Chittor fort when emperor Alauddin Khilji launched an attack on Rajastan to capture the lovely Padmini.

— Jayasi’s epic poem Padmavat also retells the siege of Chittorgarh, which was actually undertaken by Alauddin Khilji in 1303.

— As per a legend, Rani Padmini had committed Jauhar (self-immolation) before Khilji’s troops could even reach her and imprison her.

— This is not the first time a movie has been made on the queen. Various movies have been made on the legend earlier as well. Some of these include Debaki Bose’s silent film Kamonar Agun and Hindi film Rani Padmini. In 1963, A Tamil movie was also made on her and starred Sivaji Ganesan and Vyjayanthimala in the lead roles

Now, Rani Padmini existed or not, and whether she performed jauhar or was captured by Khilji’s troops remains a matter of speculation. But we will let director Sanjay Leela Bhansali narrate his version of the whole saga.
