Movie Review: Badlapur

Cast: Varun Dhawan, Yami Gautam, Nawazuddin Siddiqui, Huma Qureshi, Radhika Apte, Divya Dutta

Director: Sriram Raghvan

Genre: Thriller

The debut movie of Sriram Raghvan ‘Ek Haseena Thi’ in 2004 was an amazing thriller and worked stupendously well for Saif Ali Khan.

The talented Director is pro in handling the genre and knows how to get the best out of his actors. He has proven this in his latest movie, ‘Badlapur’ also where the best of action thriller movies can be compared.

With Varun Dhawan in the lead, ‘Badlapur’ has done justice to its type with Nawazuddin Siddiqui playing the bad guy.

The plot shows that the wife and child of Raghu (Varun Dhawan) are killed all of a sudden under unfortunate circumstances. The only mistake they commit is to be present at the wrong place at the wrong time. This leads to an intense revenge drama.

While one would start running his imagination nerve to predict that what all Raghu can do after that, Sriram Raghvan promises to prove them all wrong and offer you something new every minute, ensuring not to be glued to the stereotype formulas.

The movie then follows Raghu’s life for the next 15 years. In the mean while, bank robber and murderer Liak (Nawazuddin Siddiqui) gets old in the jail and is surviving with a hope that he will be out after 20 years and lead a happy life with the help of the money he robbed along with his partner in crime Harman (Vinay Pathak). Raghu on the other hand, has a different plan for them altogether.

Varun Dhawan has tried a new style in Badlapur, something he has never done before and undoubtedly, the 27-year-old actor has done a magnificent job in it. The impactful performance delivered by the ‘Humpty Sharma Ki Dulhaniya’ actor may also lead one to think if it really is his fourth movie.

Well, I would not be surprised if he bags the male lead actor award for the year 2015 in major award functions.

The second highlight of ‘Badlpaur’ is another brilliant performance given by Nawazuddin Siddiqui. While the female actors play a small role in the movie, but they are indeed quite important.

Liak is in love with Jhumli (Huma Qureshi), Shobha, (Divya Dutta) is a social worker working for the welfare of convicts and Yami Gautam is Raghu’s late wife.

The credit for some of the amazing moments in ‘Badlapur’ should go to the actors and the special effort of the Director.

Only one thing that was NOT needed in the movie was the unprovoked sex scene between Raghu and Jhumli. It was simply not required and is unconvincing to an extent that it clearly shows that it has been used only to add some sensuous point in the movie.

Sachin Jigar’s music will promise to leave you entertained.

NewsX Verdict: If you have taste for thriller, ‘Badlapur’ is a must watch for you. It is sure to leave you engrossed.
