He was widely known for his role as Bukka Reddy in Ram Gopal Varma’s Rakta Charitra but now Abhimanyu Singh has a new identity. The Bollywood actor, who has played numerous roles in Tamil and Telugu cinema, has now won the hearts of the audience as the fearful Oma in Theeran Adhigaaram Ondru. This Tamil film stars Karthi and Rakul Preet Singh with director H Vinoth at the helm. The movie is a superhit as is the Telugu version of the film Khakhee.
In this exclusive chat with Latha Srinivasan of NewsX, actor Abhimanyu Singh talks about his career in Bollywood and how he then started his career in the south Indian film industry. He has established himself in Tamil and Telugu cinema but like the actor says he still has many more roles to play. “I started to do more work in south films because I liked the roles and sometimes I had to run my kitchen,” reveals Abhimanyu candidly.
Speaking about working with Karthi in Theeran Adhigaaram Ondru, he says that the Kollywood star was not selfish in sharing the kind of screen space he did nor insecure about how strong the role of Oma was. “In the Hindi film industry, it’s different because the hero is given most importance,” says Abhimanyu.
The actor is waiting for a director to give a role that is written exclusively for him keeping in mind his talent and capabilities. Abhimanyu loves films like The Raging Bull and Monster and believes that those are the kind of roles that are once-in-a-lifetime. “Robert De Niro trained with Jake LaMotta and practically became a real middleweight boxer. Even in Monster, Charlize Theron’s transformation is unbelievable,” he gushes.
Today, Abhimanyu is a pan-Indian actor and can’t wait to work with superstar Rajinikanth, Kamal Haasan, Ajith, Mani Ratanam and Murugadoss.
