By constructing around 3,52,950 toilets out of a total 18,24,549 toilets built across the nation in order to promote ‘Swachh Bharat’ mission, Uttar Pradesh has taken number one spot in ‘Swachhta Hi Sewa’ rankings. Falling under Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s one of the flagship schemes ‘Swachh Bharat’ campaign, the PM had urged the nation to participate and promote ‘Swachhta Hi Sewa’ (Cleanliness is Service) drive which started from September 15, 2017 and ended on Gandhi Jayanti which was on October 2, 2017.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on August 27, 2017 during his ‘Mann Ki Baat’ address, had called upon people to create an environment of cleanliness in the entire country so that on 2nd October, which was also the third anniversary of the ‘Swachh Bharat’ Mission and Gandhi Jayanti, can be celebrated in a befitting manner.

Leading on the second spot, Rajasthan which is also a Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) ruled state constructed around 2,54,953 toilets while Karnataka, which is a Congress governed state took the third spot in ‘Swacchta Hi Sewa’ rankings.

Apart from ‘Swacchta Hi Sewa’ rankings, in September last month, the Sahanpur Nagar Panchayat of Bijnore district in Uttar Pradesh was declared the first open defecation free (ODF) panchayat by the government. Meanwhile, a reuqest has been conveyed to the central government to also declare 12 Nagar Panchayats and city corporations of the state ODF.

Earlier, while pitching his voice for a cleaner India, Prime Minister Narendra Modi had urged all NGOs, schools, colleges, social, cultural and political leaders, corporates, government officials, Collectors and sarpanches, to accelerate Swachhata activities during the September 15 – October 2 period.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi also invited Bollywood celebrities including Anushka Sharma and others to devote their precious time in order to promote the ‘Swachhta Hi Sewa’ campaign which could also work as an inspiration for millions of people in the country. To set an example, Anushka Sharma took the initiative along with other people participated in ‘Swachhta Hi Sewa’ drive and cleaned a beach in Mumbai.
