The war between LTTE and Sri Lankan government started after the failure of the Norway brokered cease fire on July 21, 2006. The intensification of the conflict between the Sri Lanka army and LTTE saw war crimes being committed by both the military and the rebel Liberation Tigers.

Civilians were attacked and their buildings bombed. And finally, on the 17th of May 2009, the 25-year-old Sri Lankan civil war ended wiith LTTE admitting defeat. On the 19th of May 2009 Prabhakaran — unarguably the world's most elusive, most innovative and, some would say, most ruthless terrorist was dead and the LTTE smashed militarily.

With Prabhakaran’s death, the bloody Sri Lankan civil war came to an abrupt end. But the peace since has been deeply uneasy.
