Sinhala and Tamil: Past and Present
Sri Lanka was known as Ceylon till 1972. The country was part of the British Empire till its Independence on 4th Feb 1948. But immediately the countrysaw demonstrations and bitterness between the Sinhalese and the Tamil political leaders.
Tamil youth started to form militant groups and on 23rd July 1983 the SriLankan civil war started. For over 26 years the civil war that was fought between LTTE and the Sri Lankan army killed an estimated 80,000 to 1,00,000 people apart from causing hardships for the population and destroying the economy. The civil war ended when the Sri Lankan military defeated the Tamil Tigers in May 2009.
