According to a letter from the Taliban’s higher education minister, Taliban has issued an indefinite ban on university study for Afghan girls.
“In a letter, the Ministry of Higher Education has ordered the suspension of higher education for female students in Afghanistan until the next announcement,” claimed Afghan news agency in a tweet.
According to Human Rights Watch (HRW), the Taliban seized control of Afghanistan in August 2021 and established policies severely curtailing basic rights, notably those of women and girls.
The Islamic organisation removed all women from civil service leadership positions and barred females from attending secondary school in the majority of regions.
Taliban rules forbid women from travelling unless accompanied by a male relative and demand women to hide their faces in public, even female television newsreaders.
Earlier on Monday, UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres emphasised the need of including all ethnic groups in Afghan political structures, saying that all ethnic groups must be represented.
He also emphasised the need of ensuring human rights in Afghanistan, particularly the rights of women and girls, the right of women to work, and the right of girls to attend education at all levels.
