 Sharad Navratri 2017 is being celebrated with full traditions and excitement across the country. India is known for its variety of cultures, festivals, values, and Navratri depicts all these colours of our country.

 During Navratri, devotees worship goddess Durga, where they fast for 9 days to show their devotion which starts from today ,September 21 which is called pratipada and ends on September 21 which is called Navami. 

As per the Hindu custom, Navratri falls twice –a- year in the months of April and October which are called Chaitra Navratri and Sharad Navratri which are mostly celebrated at a large scale in northern India.

Navratri is celebrated to delight goddess Durga, where devotees observe fasting, wearing traditional clothes, sing devotional songs and much more.

 During this auspicious time, while most of the devotees are fasting for goddess Durga during navratri, here are some foods one should completely restrain from:

1. Non-vegetarian food– Chicken, eggs, lamb, mutton, fish, and all such animals’ products should be strictly avoided. It’s also said that devotees who are not fasting too should keep away from animal products.

 2. Alcohol and other aerated beverages– Alcohol consumption is strictly prohibited during this holy period when goddess Durga is worshipped.

 3. Onion, Ginger and Garlic-Meals during these 9 days are to be prepared without using onion, garlic or ginger. 

4. Table salt– During these 9 days of fasting, devotees use ‘sendha namak’ to cook their food instead of table salt.

 5. Lentils and legumes– While fasting, devotees have to prevent eating  Lentils and legumes. Although consumption of potatoes, cucumber, fruits is allowed
