We focus on the factor of 44. Tomorrow as Bihar votes in phase 5 in Seemanchal and Mithilanchal more than 30 per cent Muslims on an average will vote to decide the fate of the main protagonists. Small wonder then that on poll eve the BJP has put out advertisements like the one you see on your screen that questions Nitish Kumar's silence on Lalu Prasad's support for consuming beef. The idea is to embarrass Lalu in the eyes of his Yadav supporters who revere the cow. In fact in at least 95 constituencies in Bihar Muslims make up on an average more than 20% of the population. Much of these constituencies have already voted and that is one of the reasons why Lalu jumped to inject the Dadri beef murder into the Bihar campaign. As the statistics show it helps both sides if the atmosphere is polarised. Beef and the holy cow are then only vehicles of polarisation. If in episode one and two we investigated statisitically why Netas were playing the caste card today we'll examine the politics behind the beef advertisement blitz and the response to it.
