Nation at 9: Jamia invites PM, Alumni protests

Parliament missed a trick today. The Opposition got down to cornering the Government on intolerance but the debate was really a one-way mugging.

The Opposition's stalwarts gunned for the Union Finance Minister Jaitley, the Junior External Affairs Minister VK Singh and even the Home Minister Rajnath Singh but studiously avoided turning the gaze inwards. Had they done so they may not have been so cavalier in dismissing a controversy that is brewing in the heart of the Capital.

Jamia University is in a pickle. It has invited the Prime Minister for a convocation ceremony but its Alumni has objected to the invite. In a long letter they have singled out the Prime Minister for making remarks against Jamia in the past. But in doing so the Alumni has also betrayed their own selectivity on the issue besides of course vindicating the BJP's stand that the prime minister is the biggest victim of intolerance.
