New Delhi: The first steps for gay rights were taken today but were quickly thwarted in a matter of seconds. The gay community was let down by the MPs who refused to entertain Shashi Tharoor's bill, a bill that sought decriminalisation of gay sex.
Shashi Tharoor of the Congress sought to table a bill to amend section 377 of the Indian penal code, but his move failed after the lower house of parliament voted 71-24 against it, while others walked out. The Bharatiya Janata Party holds a majority in the lower house.
In 2009 when the Delhi High Court ruled that prohibiting gay sex was a violation of a person's fundamental rights, gay sex was decriminalized in India.
