Supreme Court has taken Suo Motu cognisance of Muslim women's rights. Women have been demanding an end to the practice of oral triple Talaq. A survey of Muslim women last year said more than 90 percent women are against the practice and that an equal number of women are against the practice of their husbands marrying the second time. But Muslim organisations have long opposed reforms, an umbrella group of community leaders, Jamiat Ulema-e-Hind has told the court it is about personal law.
All eyes are now on the Centre which has to reply within 6 weeks. Remember, law minister had late last year said uniform civil code will be good for integration but is a sensitive issue and needs wider consultations.
