Nation at 9: From 'hero'to captain 'zero'

Captain Vijayakanth finished a distant third in Tamil Nadu. His party DMDK which was wooed by one and all drew a blank in the assembly polls. Cricketer turned politician Sreesanth was in for another loss of face after being banned for life from cricket. Then there is West Bengal BJP candidate Rupa Ganguly, known for her role as Draupadi in Mahabharat, biting the dust in the assembly polls.
A pattern is visible - despite Indian elections being portrayed as high on drama and low on important issues - the democracy is maturing. And it would be foolish of any political party or a celebrity to believe their stardom will reap votes.
People will spend big bucks and watch movies and cricket matches, but the protagonists in the election battlefield will be scrutinised for their policies and not histrionics.
