Division of power is the sacrament of democracy. It is the tumblers of checks and balances that preserve the future, sometimes at the cost of the present.
Deadlock is not unique to india. But sometimes that deadlock leads to paralysis.
That is the danger that the citizens of delhi would like to ward off. A government of the aam admi party (aap) was voted into power in the national capital with an overwhelming mandate. But the law of the land as interpreted by the high court makes it clear that all power really lies in the hands of the lieutenant governor. The man who sits in the chair has made it clear that he intends to excercise it. He's not daunted by the challenge the delhi chief minister is putting before the judgement of the supreme court.
So much so, that in conversation with me tonight, najeeb jung has hinted that his office allows him the right to even dissolve the delhi assembly if needed. Between federated statehood and the territory of the union, until the issue is resolved by law, would removing one of the posts lead to better governance? And if so, which one?
