Amnesty International the watchdog that champions the cause of the persecuted and marginalised finds itself in trouble. A Congress government has slapped sedition charges against the reputed NGO. Why?
Because during an event it organised to hear the stories of those who have suffered alleged persecution at the hand of the armed forces, some individuals raised azadi slogans. The NGO that prides itself as the guardian of constitutionalism is appalled. It says an institution cannot be booked for sedition. It says the case is ill conceived because its members weren't involved. It says the centre is being heavy handed, repressive. Most importantly Amnesty says the state has not booked the likes of Yogi Adityanath and other fringe hotheads who, according to it are also anti-nationals.
But in its outrage on the back of the sedition charge, Amnesty is itself being selective.
