By defeating her Japanese opponent PV Sindhu has assured herself of a silver medal. This makes her the first Indian woman to achieve this feat. 
 
But the nation already woke up to great news from another of its daughters this morning. Breaking the Rio jinx once and for all, 23-year-old Sakshi Malik stormed her way to a bronze medal in the 54 kg women’s wrestling category, making her the first woman wrestler to ever stand on the Olympic podium.
 
The achievements of Sakshi and PV Sindhu care more than just their wins on the court. They are a culmination of a lifetime’s struggle against every possible obstacle — from the neglect of doctors who’re products of nepotism to the apathy of junketeering netas who masquerade as cheerleaders. 
 
For now, let’s join the nation in saluting Sakshi and Sindhu for scripting history.
