The Congress party has sadly not been able to course correct. The BJP too is in no mood to relent. Rahul Gandhi could have easily laid to rest this self-defeating controversy by withdrawing his statements. He could have come out and said that he felt so hurt by the BJP appropriating the surgical strike for political gain that he lost his composure and said what he said.
But alas that was not to be. Rahul tweeted virtually justifying his remark and Congress leaders took the cue and defended his derogatory remarks to the hilt. This inevitably drew Amit Shah out and into the political battle field. The BJP president sought to turn the ‘dalal’ remark on its head accusing the Congress of ‘dalali’ in defence deals that undermined the national interest and weakened our military capacities. The remarks by Shah led to a series of tit-for-tat press conferences that has not just lowered the discourse but sadly trapped our jawans in a never-ending bitter war of words.
