Government,Muslim women, Muslim women, Attorney General Mukul Rohatgi,
It’s been a very long fight with thousands of Muslim women appealing to the courts and the Indian government to ban triple talaq and demanding that it be seen as a patriarchal issue rather than a religious one.
Today the Centre has filed its reply in court backing Muslim women and unequivocally stating that 'everybody in India is subject to the Constitution and has similar rights.
Less than a month ago the Attorney General Mukul Rohatgi had told me in an interview that the Centre would be doing just this. The patriarchal custodians of religion as still shouting interference, but today women for whom this fight is about their rights and dignity are relieved.
Are we finally close to ridding religion of sexism and truly moving towards one India, one law?
