The implementation of the long- awaited One Rank One Pension (OROP) Scheme, is likely to be announced today by the government. The defence ministry will hold a meeting today at 2:30 pm. The OROP draft has been prepared by the government and it is expected to be announced today at 3pm.
“We are meeting defence minister today,” Satbir Singh, major general (Retd.), spokesman of the retired personnel told reporters.
BJP chief Amit Shah will meet the party spokespersons at 1pm and will brief them on the OROP issue.
The government has accepted almost 98% percent of the demands made by the ex-servicemen, excluding the one which stated the revision of the pension every year or at least once in two years. The government sticks to its proposal of revising pension every five years.
Ex-serviceman and widows are likely to be paid first. The ones benefitting maximum from the announcement are widows, disabled and, lowest-ranking retired jawans. The scheme will benefit atleast 3 million veterans.
As the name suggests, OROP Scheme will bring in the element of equality and will help the retired personnel to cope with the inflation prevailing in the nation.
