Nun Gang-rape case: Cardinal Baselios Cleemis reaches Ranaghat, to meet victim

KOLKATA: Cardinal Baselios Cleemis, the President of Catholic Bishops' Conference of India (CBCI) has reached Convent of Jesus and Mary in Ranaghat, West Bengal on Wednesday.

Cardinal Baselios Cleemis will meet 72-year-old nun who was gang-raped by dacoits at Ranaghat of Nadia district in West Bengal on Saturday.

According to the reports, Cardinal will also meet the state Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee today evening.

The incident happened when the dacoits broke into the convent after 12:30 am and three-four of them raped the woman after gagging her, said authorities of the local convent school in Ranaghat sub-division.

The victim, who was critically injured, is admitted in the hospital and according to the doctors, her condition is stable.

After two days of the incident, Mamata met the victim on Monday and Chief Minister’s convoy was blocked for nearly an hour by the angry crowds who demanded justice for the 71-year-old nun. 

The protesters demanded CBI probe into the incident. The blockade took place at Mission gate on NH34 while she was returning from Ranaghat. 

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday also expressed concern over the incident and asked for the immediate reports of facts and action taken regarding the incident.
