Nun gang-rape case: NHRC issues notice to West Bengal government, seeks report

NEW DELHI: The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) on Wednesday issued a notice to the West Bengal government over the horrific gang-rape of a 71-year-old nun in West Bengal.

According to the reports, the NHRC has issued notices to the Chief Secretary and the Director General of police, seeking reports in the matter within two weeks.

Cardinal Baselios Cleemis, the President of Catholic Bishops' Conference of India (CBCI), who reached Ranaghat to meet the victim, has raised the issue, saying bring out the real motive.

Cardinal Baselios Cleemis also urged the state Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee to book the culprits soon. 

Several people have been detained in the case by the state police but no arrests have been made so far in connection to the incident.

The elderly nun was gang-raped by dacoits at Ranaghat of Nadia district in West Bengal on Saturday. The victim was critically injured and admitted in the hospital. But her condition is now stable, said the doctor.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday also expressed concern over the incident and asked for the immediate reports of facts and action taken regarding the incident.
