DELHI: Indian President, Pranab Mukherjee, has given a beautiful message to the Indian government, hinting at the views expressed by several politicians over the Dadri beef lynching case in the past few days. (Also Read: Rajnath assures 'strict action' in lynching case)
Appealing to the politicians and people to have tolerance, Pranab Mukherjee said, “Core values of diversity, tolerance and plurality must be kept in mind.” (Also Read: Sakshi Maharaj sparks row, 'Ready to kill and get killed to protect cow from slaughter')
He said that he has always looked at himself as a humble political activist.
He expressed his gratitude towards the nation and said, “I have received much more from you than what I have given to you.”
Remembering his school days, he said that his school was in a very backward area and he being a mischieveous kid would tell his mother that he didn’t want to go to school because he didn't want to walk 10 kms of trackless stretch every day.
But his mother would coax him on as there was no other option at that time and he couldn't do anything about it.
Pranab Mukherjee, connected this incident with his outlook towards life. He said, it was this statement by his mother that impacted him and taught him to manage and adjust with whatever means were available.
Addressing those assembled in the meeting, the President acknowledged their contribution in taking the country forward. But, he said, that a lot still remains to be achieved and this process of development is never-ending.
He believes that the values of diversity, tolerance and plurality are values that have kept the Nation together over the centuries.
Indian civilization has survived because of its core civilizational values. If one keeps this in mind, then nothing can prevent our democracy from moving on.
Whether our political class across party lines understand this message coming from the Head of State, will be seen in the times to come.
