In what is sure to bring serious embarrassment to the Sonia Gandhi led Congress Party, its former leader Cherian Philip made shocking remarks on Sunday evening on his Facebook page. In his anti-Congress blog, he expressed that women in the Congress party got tickets to fight elections in return for sexual favours.
Not many days ago, Youth Congress workers had removed their shirts and marched the streets of Thrissur to protest against the denial of tickets to workers to contest local body elections. In reference to that protest, Cherian commented, “The Youth Congress protest by removing shirts was a model agitation. In the past those women who had secretly staged this agitation had got Congress tickets to contest polls.”
The comments from the former party leader created an uproar within the Congress party with party State Chief VM Sudheeran demanding removal of the anti-woman statement. Apart from this, the Mahila Congress State President, Bindu Krishna also said that Philip had insulted the women party workers of the Congress party. She further threatened to move to court if he did not retract his comments.
Unmoved by the anger, Philip stood by his comments and said that he did not make any anti-woman statement and instead referred to a few leaders who had definitely insulted womanhood. “I commented against those leaders who exploited women,” he was quoted as saying in a report.
Responding to the demand of Sudheeran for an apology, Philip said, “I have not exposed more things prevailing in Congress, out of sheer decency. If I am depicted as anti-woman, I will be forced to reveal more incidents about exploitation of women by the Congress leader as there are stinking stories about how few leaders obtained tickets in elections.”
“When Antony was the President and Sudheeran was Vice-President in the State Congress, I had served as the General Secretary of the party. Sudheeran known everything,” Philip said, adding, “The Congress leaders would be exposed if Bindu Krishna moves court against me. I should be subjected to polygraph test and let everything in my mind come out.”
Philip, a close associate of AK Antony and Chief Minister Oommen Chandy for many years, revolted against the party in 2001 after he was denied a ticket to contest Assembly Elections that year. He resigned from the Congress Party and contested Oommen Chandy as the Left candidate from Puthuppally.
