New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday in a speech delivered at Rajpath, paid tribute to the former prime minister of India, Indira Gandhi, on her death anniversary.

“Tributes to former Prime Minister of India, Mrs. Indira Gandhi on her death anniversary,” the prime minister said in a statement.

The PM, however, did not visit Shakti Sthal to pay his tributes to the former prime minister of India.

She was the daughter of the first prime minister of the country, late Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru, and was born on November 19, 1917.

Indira Gandhi was assassinated on October 31, 1984, by her bodyguards a few months after she ordered the storming of the Harmandir Sahib in Amritsar to counter the Punjab insurgency.

She held the highest office as the prime minister of India from January 1966 to March 1977. She again chaired the prime minister’s office from January 14, 1980 till her death.
