KERALA: Proving once again the misogynist mentality of some people in India, Aboobacker Musalyar, Secretary-General of the All India Sunni Jam-Iyyathul Ulema made a shocking statement in regard to gender equality saying, “Gender equality is against Islam” and that “men and women can never be equal.”

Comparing women to merely baby delivering machines, he said, “Women are fit only for delivering babies.”

On the backdrop of Islam, Aboobacker Musalyar went on to further state that even if women demand to be given equal opportunity to education, such a thing has never been made compulsory or even mentioned in Islam.

Calling gender equality un-Islamic, Musalyar called men and women equality to be non-existent in Islam adding that, “A survey will show you how men are better than women.”

Such statements coming from a religious head is not only shocking but insulting for not just Muslim women but each and every woman of the country.

The thought which such a statement provokes is, has India really achieved freedom or is it still in chains? Chains of male chauvinism and dominance…
