After politicians, the Tamil Nadu Film Industry or Kollywood has come out in the open demanding the release of all the seven killers of former Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi. All the prominent Unions of Kollywood have joined hands to demand the release of Rajiv Gandhi killers. The association includes actors and filmmakers.
The association in its plea to Jayalalithaa’s government demanded that convicts ought to be released under Article 161 of the Indian Constitution. However, the Supreme Court had earlier stayed Jayalalithaa's attempt to free Rajiv Gandhi killers from jail.
DMK’s organisation Secretary T K S Elangovan reacted to Kollywood’s support to release Rajiv Gandhi killers saying that he did not know why the Nadigar Sangam had taken over the issue of the release of the Rajiv Gandhi assassination case prisoners. He said that the DMK had been demanding that since the convicts were in prison for over 20 years and had undergone enough punishments, they should be released regardless of their involvement in the assassination.
A few days ago, Arputham Ammal, the mother of one of the convicts in the assassination of former Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi petitioned to Tamil Nadu Chief Minister J. Jayalalithaa for her son's release.
