New Delhi: The Delhi High Court on Friday asked Jawaharlal Nehru University Students Union (JNUSU) president Kanhaiya Kumar’s lawyers to return with some corrections in his bail plea after the Supreme Court had referred the case to it. The plea is likely to be heard on Monday.
The security was tight outside the Delhi High Court as Kanhaiya Kumar’s bail hearing was taking place, especially in the backdrop of violence in the Patiala House court premises earlier. The entry to the High Court was restricted owing to security concerns as a large group of media persons, activists and students unions thronged the premises. There was a ruckus outside the court premises as lawyers staged a protest and tried to enter the court raising tricolours. They spoke of their protest as a peaceful demonstration and chanted things such as “Bharat mata ki jai” and “Pakistan Murdabad”.
The Supreme Court had earlier on Friday refused to interfere in the matter of granting the JNUSU president, Kanhaiya Kumar, bail saying that it was not appropriate for the top court to get involved at this point in the case. He was in police custody for organising a pro-Afzal Guru and anti-India event on the Jawaharlal Nehru University campus.
The Delhi Police had said that extension of custody was not required and they were not opposing his bail plea saying that Kanhaiya is not a hardened criminal and is after all, a student. He is currently set to remain in judicial custody until the 2nd of March.
The JNU ‘sedition’ controversy has already taken political undertones with the Rashtriya Janata Dal, Janata Dal (United) and Nationalist Congress Party to meet President Pranab Mukherjee for intervention on the matter. They’ve also called for an all-India protest on the matter.
