New Delhi: In a startling confession, RVS Mani, a former home ministry official, said that he was “compelled” to file the second affidavit in the Ishrat Jahan fake encounter case.

Mani said “I was given orders to file it. That was the order of the government. So, I went and signed it. I was pressured to frame seniors and was tortured by the SIT chief”.

It was not drafted at my level,” he said. “If the home secretary did not file the affidavit, it is clear who filed it. The home secretary is the senior-most bureaucrat in the MHA. The conclusion is easily drawn,” he added.

Mani in his confession hinted on the fact that the affidavit was filed on the orders of then Home Minister P Chidambaram.

The second affidavit is the one in which the references to the alleged links of Ishrat Jahan, Pranesh Pillai, Amjad Ali Rana and Zeeshan Johar with Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT) were removed. According to him, the first affidavit was based on facts.

The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) accused the UPA government of being involved in this case and said it was time for Chidambaram to clarify

The Congress countered by saying that the killers are being shielded.
