New Delhi: Former Prime Minister HD Deve Gowda on Saturday defended Indian business tycoon Vijay Mallya in connection with money laundering case saying, “He is the son of the Karnataka soil, He is not running away.” Defending Mallya, Gowda further added, “Every airline is facing losses these days and there is no reason to target an international businessman like Mallya”.

HD Gowda, speaking in favour of Vijay Mallya, also said “Mallya’s father Vittal Mallya was close to Congress and they have not come from a foreign land.”

HD Gowda defended JDS party’s decision to nominate Vijay Mallya to the Rajya Sabha saying, “It’s not a sin and he is from a respectable family. Some discrepancies happened, but how could he have known it at that time.”

Mallya is currently believed to be in London and he is facing legal proceedings for alleged money laundering worth Rs. 9 crore.

The bench issued notice to him and sought his response within two weeks on pleas filed by a consortium of banks seeking direction for freezing his passport and his presence before the apex court.

Opposition Congress leader Rahul Gandhi and Delhi CM Arvind Kejriwal have raised questions about how he was allowed to leave the country despite a notice tendered by the CBI.
