Patna: Sharad Yadav will not contest for the position of Janata Dal (United)’s president for the fourth term, sources said. JD(U) will elect a new president in its national council meeting soon, bringing Sharad Yadav’s three terms to an end.

According to sources, Yadav has shown unwillingness to contest.

“Sharad Yadav as party president has completed his three successive terms. He has now refused to make any amendment in the party constitution so as to elect him for the next coming term,” party spokesperson said.

With Sharad Yadav not contesting for the fourth term, chances are high that Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar might take up the role himself as he seeks to expand the party’s footprints beyond Bihar.

The decision to elect a new President by JD(U) indicates the changes in its internal dynamics at a time when Kumar is being seen to be preparing the party for the 2019 Lok Sabha polls.
