New Delhi: An encroachment demolition drive in the heart of Delhi’s famous Chandni Chowk area by North Delhi Municipal Cooperation (NDMC), Shahjahanabad Redevelopment Corporation (SRDC) and Delhi Police personnel on Thursday was met with resistance by locals.
As per reports, the encroachment drive began at 6 AM with the removal of illegal structures adjacent to the main road and places of worship. The local residents of Chandni Chowk especially from the Sikh community opposed the drive.
The demolition team reached the area and tried to dismantle the water kiosk (pyau) agitating the locals.

Despite the protests, a municipal official said, "The drive continued and all types of encroachments were removed.”
BJP state president Satish Upadhyay has termed it a ‘conspiracy’ by the Arvind Kejriwal-led Aam Aadmi party government, and that they should apologise for the same.
