Pune: The officials of Savitribai Phule Pune University (SPPU) are confused with regards to the re-establishment of Dr. Babasaheb Ambedkar’s statue in the campus. Earlier, the officials had to face flack for installing a poorly made statue of Dr.Babasaheb Ambedkar on the campus.
The embarrassing incident occurred on August 9, 2014, which led them to face severe criticism as experts found it lacking in several aspects. The university officials then decided to cover-up the statue and substitute it with a better one in place.
SPPU took nearly one and-a-half years time to finalise a clay model as the officials are not willing to take any chances. They even showed the model to at least 40-50 experts, including feedback from those who had made an objection to the earlier statue.
SPPU officials wanted to unveil the statue this April 14, which marks 125th birth anniversary of Dr Ambedkar.
The registrar of SPPU Dr. Narendra Kadu said,” “Yes we had hoped to inaugurate the statue on April 14, but it won’t be possible. Right now, only the clay model is ready, which we have shown to at least 40-50 experts, including those who took objection earlier, as well as Dr Babasaheb Ambedkar’s family. They have suggested a few minor changes and after making those, we would once again show them the model.”
Kadu added, “We have even asked for permission from the Directorate of Art who informed us that they would also take expert opinion before responding to us. So once everything is finalised, only then shall we issue the order for the final bronze statue.”
After the gaffe, the officials have been extremely cautious this time around.
