Guwahati: Hours after British Royal couple’s visit to the famous Kaziranga National Park in Assam, poachers shot dead a rhinoceros using AK 47 s and took away its horn on Wednesday night.

The killing of the Rhino took place just 30 kms away from the lodge where Prince William and Kate Middleton were staying.

This is the sixth rhino killed by poachers in Kaziranga in the current year. There was an exchange of fire with the poachers who managed to flee from the scene of crime.

Subhashis Das, Kaziranga Divisional Forest Officer, said, “One adult male rhino was killed near the Patahi Beel water-body under the Borghop anti-poaching camp in the Burrapahar range. The incident occurred at around 11:10 PM on Wednesday. Our forest guards who rushed to the spot on hearing of gunshots were engaged in an exchange of fire with the poachers, but the culprits managed to escape under the cover of darkness.”

In contrary, the Royal couple had visited the Kaziranga’s Centre for Wildlife Rehabilitation and Conservation on Wednesday to know how officials deal with poachers.

Kaziranga, about 250 km from Guwahati, is home to the famous one-horned rhino which is becoming extinct day by day due to poaching. Rhino poaching in Kaziranga has become a political issue in state over the past few years.
