Kolkata: Eight people have been sentenced to death by a court in West Bengal on Tuesday for the 2014 murder of then college student Sourav Chowdhury, who had led a campaign against illegal liquor and drug menace in the North 24 Parganas district.
Chowdhury, then 21, was brutally murdered and chopped to pieces. His decomposed body was recovered on the railway tracks about 30 kms from Kolkata.
About two years after his death, a court on Barasat had convicted 12 out of the 13 accused in the case last week.
Among those convicted was the main accused Shyamal Karmarkar, believed to control the drug and liquor trade in the area.
The lawyer for the defendants had said that they will appeal in a higher court.
