New Delhi: Another legacy war has begun in the country as Rajiv Gandhi Khel Abhiyan Scheme has been revised by the government. The former Prime Minister’s name has been dropped from this particular award, which now will be called ‘Khelo India’.

Two other sport projects – Urban Sports Infrastructure Scheme (USIS) and National Sports Talent Search Scheme (NSTSS) – launched by the Congress-led previous UPA regime have been immersed under Khelo India scheme, for which, Rs 140 crore has already been allocated in NDA government’s third budget for the financial year 2016-17.

Union Minister for Sports & Youth Affairs Sarbananda Sonowal said that “Khelo India will definitely inspire the goal of the country, particularly the youngsters and we have to motivate them from the ground level so that they can play well in near future and to create strong sporting environment for the country and to connect it with countryside particularly villages.”

Khelo India scheme is based on Gujarat’s model of “Khel Mahakumbh”, where schools and colleges from different parts of the country participate in about 27 disciplines. Every year under this project the Sports Authority of Gujarat (SAG) also organises summer camps.

Earlier, the sports ministry was trying to launch this scheme on April 16 but non-availability of PM Narendra Modi forced it to fix some new date.

This scheme can also prove to be a major row between Congress and BJP where Rajiv Gandhi Khel Abhiyan Scheme will be renamed.
