Imphal: President Pranab Mukherjee will visit Manipur on Saturday to attend ‘Khongjom Day’ as the chief guest at the main function to be held at Khebaching of Khongjom in Thoubal District and will also inaugurate a Monument-cum-Tourist Centre at Khongjom.
Khongjom Day is observed on April 23 every year by the Government of Manipur to pay tribute to the brave sons of Manipur, who made supreme sacrifice for the cause of their motherland in the Anglo-Manipur War (1891).
In the morning, Chief Minister Okram Ibobi Singh will lead the state in paying floral tribute to the statue of Paona Brajabashi, who led the Manipuris in the fight against the British at the Battle of Khongjom.
In the afternoon, President Mukherjee will inaugurate a newly constructed Khongjom War Monument and will pay floral tribute to the war heroes of Khongjom Battle at the war monument.
Governor V. Shanmuganathan, Chief Minister Singh, other ministers and MLAs of the state will also attend the inaugural function of the war monument.
Meanwhile, security has been beefed up in Imphal and Thoubal in view of the proposed visit of the President. Search operations are going on in many localities of Manipur valley as a precautionary measure.
Police check-points have also been opened at many critical points on the way from Imphal to Khongjom to prevent any untoward incident.
