NEW DELHI: Amid the major Kisan rally organized by Arvind Kejriwal’s Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), escalating tensions in the political drama, a farmer from Rajasthan climbed a tree and hanged himself in front of numerous people including the Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal at the Janatar Mantar.
The man who was declared ‘brought dead’ by the doctors at the Ram Manohar Lohia Hospital (RML) was later identified as Gajender Singh from Dausa district of Rajasthan. He left a suicide note in which he mentioned about his inability to fend for his three children anymore.
Singh first tried to draw the attention of hundreds of people gathered to protest against the Centre’s land acquisition bill by frantically waving a broom from the top of a tree.
While Congress leader Ajay Maken slammed the Delhi state government for not being ‘vigilant’ towards the incident, reports suggest that the AAP leaders and other did climb up the tree after Gajender urging him to come down.
Within no time, Singh hung himself from the tree as the crowd including several AAP leaders, supporters and journalists watched in shock and horror.
The tree was planted just a few metres from the stage where the Delhi CM and Deputy CM Manish Sisodia were seated.
As the chaos increased after the incident, Kejriwal shouted to the crowd to calm down and urged the police to bring him down.
The man was immediately taken to the hospital after he fell down where he was declared dead.
After his speech at the Jantar Mantar, Arvind Kejriwal then rushed to the hospital.
“He climbed the tree before our eyes and I kept requesting the police to save him. But the police unfortunately are not in our control. But at least, he is under god’s control now. I am sad that he climbed the tree in front of us but nobody tried to stop him,” Kejriwal said.
Slamming the Delhi government, Congress leader Sachin Pilot commented, “I believe that saving a life is more important than making a speech. It is very unfortunate that at a political rally, a farmer killed himself. It is sad that no one tried to stop him from doing so at a rally.”
