Mumbai: Shiv Sena on Monday said that the party will seek answers from the government on beleaguered businessman Vijay Mallya’s ‘escape’ from the country when he owes over Rs 9000 crores to the banks of the country.
Anandrao Vithoba Adsul, party leader in the Lok Sabha, said, “We will bring this up in the Parliament. How can someone escape from the country despite owing a huge sum like that to the banks? Why has there no action been taken against him?”
Earlier, on Sunday, the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) had revoked the liquor baron’s passport.
Known as ‘king of good times’ once upon a time, the government had been cracking its whip upon Mallya for absconding while in massive debt of the banks. Mallya also ignored three summons issued by the Enforcement Directorate (ED), following which, the government revoked his passport.
Mallya was alleged to have diverted Rs 430 crore of an IDBI loan only to acquire properties abroad.
In response to a plea by the ED on April 15 in Mumbai, a special court, on April 18, had issued a non-bailable arrest warrant against the on-the-run businessman, under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act.
Mallya owes over Rs 9000 crores to the banks. The beleaguered businessman had offered Rs 4,000-crore loan repayment proposal which was rejected.
