Barnala: In another shocking incident in Barnala village of Punjab, a 32-year-old farmer and his 60-year-old mother committed suicide in front of cops and bank officials. As per reports they were being hounded by the bank officials to repay their loan.
The farmer had asked the bank officials for more time to pay back his loan but his plea was turned down. The bank officials were visiting the farmer to auction his land. On being refused more time to repay the loan, the farmer and his mother consumed pesticide and committed suicide.
The brazen attitude with which banks subdue low-income families is not a new phenomenon as earlier on April 16, a 26-year-old farmer named Ramasamy, in Mettupalayam in Coimbatore district, committed suicide after being unable to pay back his loan. Ramasamy had consumed a lethal dose of pesticide which affected to his death before reaching the hospital.
As many as 116 farmers have committed suicide due to agrarian reasons so far this year, with maximum cases reported in Maharashtra, followed by Punjab and Telangana, the Parliament was informed today.
