Visakhapatnam: Bio-diesel unit in Duvvada SEZ gutted by fire

Visakhapatnam: As per latest reports on the fire in the Bio-diesel unit in Duvvada SEZ in Visakhapatnam, a Naval medical team has been deployed at the accident site on standby in case of any threat to life.

Two reconnaissance aircrafts and 40 fire tenders have also been deployed in action at the bio-diesel unit.

Four out of the 12 tankers that were set ablaze have been doused while the remaining are still on fire.

Earlier, late on Tuesday, a manufacturing unit of a bio-diesel company, Biomax Fuels Limited, in the Visakhapatnam SEZ, located at Duvvada, accidentally caught fire.

There were over 12 workers at the unit but no casualties were reported from the accident site as all of them ran for safety. This was also confirmed by the Minister for HRD Ganta Srinivasa, who had rushed to the spot immediately after the accident.

Out of a total of 18 storage tanks, fire had spread to 12 of them, setting the manufacturing unit ablaze and making it difficult for the fire tenders to take control of the situation.

Soon after the news of the fire broke, at least 10 fire engines reached the spot and additional fire engines with chemical foam were requisitioned to fight the blaze unfortunate incident.

The Biomax facility is one of the biggest bio-diesel plants in India with a manufacturing capacity of over 5 lakh tonnes per annum.
