New Delhi: Han Zheng, a member of the Politburo of the Communist Party of China and the Communist Party Secretary of Shanghai, will be paying a five-day official visit to India beginning today at the invitation of External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj.
The visit comes under the exchange programme between the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) of India and the International Department of the Communist Party of China (MEAIDCPC).
Making this announcement at MEA's weekly media briefing, spokesperson Vikas Swarup said Han Zheng, who is accompanied by a strong business delegation, will visit New Delhi, Agra Bengaluru and Mumbai during his visit in India.
"He will meet Indian leaders and interact with a cross section of Indian political and business circles. It is expected that the interaction during his visit will contribute to further strengthening of the closer developmental partnership that was established during the important visit of President Xi Jinping to India in 2014," said Swarup, while divulging details of his engagements in India.
Saying the visit is under the exchange programme between MEAIDCPC, he added, "Following the institutionalisation and expansion of the MEAIDCPD during the landmark visit of Prime Minister Narendra Modi to China in May 2015, this the highest level visit from China under this exchange programme."
The last visit from India under the MEAIDCPC was of the Chief Minister of Haryana, who had visited China in January 2016.
Swarup said the MEAIDCPC is an innovative programme that offers the opportunity for interaction between states and provinces in India and China and caters to the specificities of the two political systems.
"It helps enhance mutual understandings. Many senior leaders currently in China's leadership have visited India under this programme," he added.
