The city known as a hub of higher education fared badly in the senior secondary results declared by Punjab School Education Board (PSEB) on Friday. Out of 341 students on the merit list, three belong to the Mohali district, out of which, two students are from meritorious schools while one studies at a government model senior secondary school in the Mohali district.
The three students, Chanpreet Kaur, Navjot Kaur and Rajwinder Kaur are all joint toppers and secured 431 (95.78 per cent) marks each.
However, the government schools of the district had to answer questions about the poor performance despite being provided with required strength of teachers and infrastructure.
The Mohali district secured the pass percentage of about 69.11% out of 77.06% overall.
Around 8,500 students appeared for the board examination in Mohali district this year, and 5,922 passed the examination. Compared to last year – the pass percentage of 67.77 per cent – it was lesser than this year, however 8 students managed to find a place on the merit list. In the year 2014, only 3 students secured the place on the merit list.
The pass percentage in 2014 was so far better in the last three years. In 2014, the district had a pass percentage of 78.09%.
The Mohali district is ahead of Tarn Taran district which has one student on the merit lis; Pathankot which has two students on the list and Shaheed Bhagat Singh Nagar (Nawa Shahar) which has only one student on the merit list this year. PSEB chairperson Tejinder Kaur Dhaliwal said, “It was strange that the district which had adequate number of teachers in all the government schools and good infrastructure was doing badly in the results every year.”
She added that although PSEB could not take any action against the teachers, the education department should certainly look into the matter.
