Chennai: Days after the PMK chief Anbumani Ramadoss opposed the freebies promised in manifestos by Jayalalithaa and Karunanidhi, activists questioned the grand standing for the upcoming Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly election scheduled for May 16.
Activists reminded the political parties that the Supreme Court has ordered the banning of sop culture.
Some of the citizens were of the opinion that the freebie culture has spoiled all the people of the current generation in the state.
“Democracy is facing extinction in Tamil Nadu. There is a massive exercise going on to collectively bribe their electorates and individually indulge in corruption. Collectively this is done through election manifestos by the ruling party in total violation of the Supreme Court judgement and the constitution of India,” said an activist.
Recently an advocate from Chennai in his contempt notice sought the authorities to officially cancel the election and take action against the political parties in Tamil Nadu which have offered freebies in their manifestos.
However, the Election Commission is apparently helpless to annul the freebies as requested by these petitioners because there are only a few hours left for the poll campaigns to end.
